Secrets In A Forest requires a disclaimer notice, a Proceed with Caution to anyone opening the pages. The book is classified as historical fiction, set in a real place, during a culturally recognizable and significant time period in the days of COVID-19.
I have recreated events, locales, and conversations from memory. At the age of seventy my memory isn’t what it used to be. For that reason my recall of events, people and places differs from the view of other witnesses to events. I have developed an attitude over the years, a disposition, that colors my view and presentation of information.
The characters found among these pages represent the best of the Cedar Valley population. They run the gamut from real to complete fabrications. They all live inside my head and seek control of the keypad on my laptop. I have changed some identifying characteristics and details such as physical properties, occupations, and places of residence.
Names of people and places have been changed to protect the privacy rights of individuals. As an example, Ezra Toomey does not want tourists flooding his church or camping on his land. A sizable donation could change his mind. Mavis Sampson retired from her job at the post office and spends her time in a church basement turning cloth patches into quilts. She does not want to be bothered. I can’t emphasize that enough. And Tad Miller’s old labrador, Tuffy, also a pseudonym, still dawdles down Main Street. He doesn’t want to be cornered. He was exonerated and considered “provoked” in his most recent assault on a tourist from Illinois who insisted Tuffy pose for the man’s selfie.
As you read Secrets in a Forest, ask yourself: Which details are true? Which details are made up?Does this author accurately reflect the issues of the day?
These questions have become critically important with the advent of social media. They have always been important in the growth of democracies. And more so when the pillars of democracy are pilloried. When you set this book down after reading it, ask yourself: What lesson does the author want me to take from this?
And then ask, “Where can I find the recipe for a maple bacon fritter?”
